How is a section divided up?

Prairie Locator works using the Dominion Land Survey system which is a method dividing land into one-square-mile (1.6 km²) sections used in Western Canada.

There are 36 sections in a township and each section is 640 acres. Each section can be divided into halves, quarters, and legal subdivisions (LSDs). Each section is given a number from 01 to 36, starting in the south east corner and working west and then north and back.

Half Sections is when you split the full section in half by either north or south, each being 320 acres, and are referenced by NH SH EH WH.

Quarter Sections are in turn dividing the full section into four equal quarters (NW NE SW SE) and are 160 acres.

Legal Subdivisions (LSDs) further divides a section into 16 equal parts, each being 40 acres, and are referenced by 01 - 16, starting in the south east corner and working west and then north and back.
